Welcome to the Van Helsing Academy: a rehabilitation center for vampires, shifters, and witches who don’t like to follow the rules.

Mina can’t remember anything about the night she was attacked. All she knows is what she’s been told: she got separated from her team during a mission and turned up two months later covered in cuts and bruises alongside two dead vampires.

After being blamed for their deaths, she is sentenced to three years at the supernatural rehabilitation center, the Van Helsing Academy.

As Mina searches for answers, lies are slowly unraveled and alliances forged. Soon she will uncover a secret plot that threatens to destroy her family legacy and ignite a war between the supernatural factions.

Van Helsing Academy is the first book in a new YA paranormal romance series. No harem. Perfect for fans of Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins, and Mythos Academy by Jennifer Estep.

My Thoughts

Today I will be very shirt and direct with this review. I was a bit disappointed because I expected to love this book, but sadly I didn’t. The story was entertaining, but with some very unbelievable and questionable things happening throughout it. Like, how is a 16 year old human girl with no extra powers and special skills a part of an official unit who hunt rouge supernatural creatures with super human strengths and speed? Also why would adults allow teens to have orgies which are about fertility and getting pregnant? And these two are just the tip of the iceberg.

The book was written from Mina’s POV. There are vampires, shifters, witches and humans in this world. And then there are Reapers, who are humans and kind of a police force that hunt supernaturals who brake law. We also have a council of course that governs supernaturals and then the Van Helsing Academy, where teens that break rules are sent to be rehabilitated. That’s the place where Mina Van Helsing is sent and our story takes place with a bit of romance, new friendships, betrayal and some secrets unraveling.

I kind of liked Mina, her love interest Sacha and friend Kiera, however, I wasn’t emotionally connected to them and didn’t actually care that much about what happened to them. Mina and Sacha had their banter and cute moments, but it was a bit insta-lovey. The biggest plus – no love triangle.

I was lucking some real and deep emotions to make me feel anything, so at the end it was just an entertaining story with a potential that wasn’t fully embraced.

There was some mystery about werewolves in general and about Sacha. There was some political intrigue and secrets to be discovered. But we also had some cheesy and cliche high school scenes.

“It’s time I get back to my family roots.”

“Mina, what are you saying?” Mom asked curiously.

“I’m going on a vampire hunt.”

I expected more from this book, but it did make me curious about what’s actually happening in this world and what’s going to happen next.
