Foster girl. Trash. That’s all I am to the world. And that’s fine. After surviving New Jersey’s foster system, I can survive anything. Even taking a dangerous job from a tall, gorgeous stranger so I can keep my little sister safe—a job that goes very, very wrong.
Suddenly I’m facing a brutal choice: a decade in jail or four years as a ward of Talonswood Reform Academy—a place with an all too perfect correction record. A place that makes bootcamp look like a spa.
But Talonswood and its cruel cadets are far more than they seem, and so are the four men who rule it. Ellis. Asher. Reese. Cassis. Powerful, impossibly beautiful men who ignite a wildfire inside me—and who will stop at nothing to make my life a living hell.
But it turns out I’m more than I seem, too. And I’m not going down without a fight.
LAST CHANCE ACADEMY is a full length dark reverse harem paranormal romance. This is the first of four books in Immortals of Talonswood, a new series from Amazon’s top-100 author Alex Lidell. With hot shifter-fae, delicious vampires, one lone witch, Talonswood isn’t your normal reform school.
Alex Lidell is the Amazon Breakout Novel Awards finalist author of THE CADET OF TILDOR (Penguin, 2013) and Amazon top 100 author and KDP-all star winner for POWER OF FIVE and LERA OF LUNOS (Danger Bearing Press, 2018). She is an avid horseback rider, a (bad) hockey player, and an ice-cream addict. Born in Russia, Alex learned English in elementary school, where a thoughtful librarian placed a copy of Tamora Pierce’s ALANNA in Alex’s hands. In addition to becoming the first English book Alex read for fun, ALANNA started Alex’s life long love for fantasy books with strong heroines. Alex lives in Washington, DC.

Let’s get straight to the point. Did I expect to love this book as much as I did? Honestly, no. Because I read a review that talked about this being the usual story with a super special heroine with blocked powers, where everyone knows how special she is except her and so on. However, it wasn’t actually the case.
Was the heroine special? Yes, but it wasn’t just your usual story with this snowflake of a super special female. She was special because witches are rare in this world, which means that any witch in this world is special and not only our heroine. Was her power blocked? Yes, but it was the same for any other witch. Did we meet other witches? No, but they are very rare and this is just the first book.
“Ms. Devinee, as I truly hope you are aware, you are now a ward of Talonswood Reform Academy. You may call this a reform school, a military prison, or hell on earth – so long as you do it out of my earshot, I don’t care. What I do care about is that you understand that our rules are strict and absolute.”
I very much enjoyed this book as it was an entertaining and gripping story with fascinating world, characters and emotional turmoil that kept me engaged with everything that was happening there.
Let’s talk about the characters. The book had mostly written in Sam’s POV, but there was also a few chapters from Ellis’s POV and a chapter with Cassis and Asher’s POV as well. I would have loved to see more chapters from our four male POVs, but we still have book coming in this series, so there will be chance for that.
“I’m not a man.”
(..) “Could have fooled me.”
“I’m a male.” (..)
“You are a backstabbing asshole who nearly cost me my life and did cost me my freedom. And the moment I get a chance, I am going to chop off your maleness with the dullest knife I can find and stuff it down your throat. Are we on the same page now?” (..)
(..) “You truly have no inkling of anything. Who I am. What you are. Where we’re going.”
(..) “Asshole. Idiot. Prison.”
Sam was a physically week young female as many of us women are. Sorry, but that’s just the way it is, even if we don’t want to admit to being weaker. Most men just are physically stronger and bigger than women. However, Sam was strong in spirit, mind and will. She was strong-headed and strong willed character, who is not going to give up and give all the power to a man just because he was physically stronger and could hurt her body. She was a fighter in spirit, she had fire in her. She didn’t let her dark circumstances and hard life destroy and rule her, she fought trough it.
Was she perfect? No. Did she make mistakes and bad decisions? Of course, we all do. And she was loyal as Sam was ready to do anything for her foster sister, to protect her and give her better life than she had.
Man with power never hesitate to use it. Just ask any other graduate of New Jersey foster system – we all have scars to prove it’s true.
As this is a reverse harem romance then we have four love interests – Ellis (fae-shifter), his half-brother Asher (fae-shifter), and his ex-friends Cassis (vampire) and Reese (vampire).
I kind of liked all four guys, but at the same time I can’t say much about them, especially Reese as we didn’t get to know them well enough, but I guess we will have a chance in the next books. I saw glimpses of these males and my interest was peeked. They felt like complex characters with complicated emotional inner-battles due to their dark past. So I really want to get to know better every single one of them. And I very much want to find out more about their past and the dark events that kind of shattered their friendship. I want to see them become close again and I want to fall in love with them all.
This first book was more oriented on Sam and Ellis. Their interactions at times were fun and entertaining, at times intense and steamy, and at times heart-breaking and emotional but also a bit sweet. I actually liked to concentrated just on one relationship for now because we didn’t get overwhelmed with information about all five characters at the same time. We are given a chance to meet them gradually and get to know them bit by bit, kind of in a realistic manner. And I got a chance to start to fall in love with Ellis first.
“I’m not being punished for attempting to kill you, witch,” Ellis’s pierce through me to grip my stomach. “I’m being punished for letting you live. And I regret it already.”
The romance. I enjoyed it a lot. There was intense chemistry, some darkness, angst and steam in the romance because it’s a hate-to-love type of romance, as witches are considered powerful and dangerous, so they are kind of hated by the rest of the supernatural world. So Sam and her four males didn’t start of on the best of terms, but it just gave the story more sass, complexity, emotional intensity and passion. The same time also relations between fae-shiffters and vampires are not that great. Hence, there is a lot of tension, darkness, danger, hidden world politics and complicated relationships happening around this romance.
Best part was that romance was slow-burning and we at first saw her mainly falling in love with Ellis and also developing some feelings for Cassis.
I like that she didn’t fall in love instantly with all four guys at the same time. The romance is taking its time and happens gradually, so it’s giving me a chance to fall for them as well.
“Dusk isn’t for you. Go back to Talonwood and find yourself a pack.” He cocks his head. “Unless of course you are really a witch.”
I get to my feet. “And if I am?”
Cassis gives me a devastating smile that never touches his dark eyes. “Then you will never have a pack. You will never be safe.”
The romance was slowly blossoming to life, the characters were intriguing with dark and complicated past, with some complex and confusing emotions for us to untangle and explore. The story was emotional, entertaining and addictive. The world was fascinating with some danger, hidden agendas and secrets to still uncover in the next books. There is still so much to discover, so I can’t wait for the second book in the series.
If you love paranormal romance, this book is for you. If you love reverse harem romance this book is for you. If you love slow-burning romance, this book is for you. If you like a bit of darkness in your romance, this book is for you. If you like strong characters, this book is for you. If you like enemies-to-lovers trope, this book is for you. If you enjoy any type of romance, this book is for you. If you are an urban fantasy reader, this book is for you.
However, this book won’t be for all readers – trigger warning for attempted rape on the page, and attempted rape and child abuse off the page.
