WWW Wednesday – April 29, 2020

Dear book-lovers,

Welcome to WWW Wednesday! This meme is hosted by Taking on a World of Words. The idea of this meme is to answer three W questions, which are: What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you’ll read next? *Note. Click on the book’s title to check it on Goodreads.

So nothing has changed with my three month long reads as I’m still on page 23 of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo. The same with A Heart So Fierce and Broken (Cursebreakers #2) by Brigid Kemmerer, still on page 254. Still 17% into the story of Alien Minds (Dimension Drift #1) by Christina Bauer. And still 25% in The Aviary (The Uncaged #1) by Emily Shore. There has been no progress made with these four books because I haven’t really had any time to read them as I have so many ARCs to get through.

A few days ago I started reading an ARC of adult contemporary romance collection of five steamy novellas with insta-love romances as the name suggests – Insta Lovers by J.L Beck and C. Hallman. Review is coming in couple of days 😉

Last Wednesday I didn’t write WWW post because I wasn’t feeling well, so today I will also mention the books that I read during the other week as well. So I read 5 books last week and 5 books this week (meaning time from last till this Wednesday) 🙂

ARC of a first book in an adult paranormal reverse harem romance seriesMoonchild (Dark Moon Prison #1) by Cara Wylde (2.5 stars) – you can read my review on Goodreads here.

ARC of a second book in an adult contemporary dark mafia romance duetHis (Ties That Bind #2) by Natasha Knight and A. Zavarelli (4.25 stars) – check out my full review here.

ARC of a second book in an adult contemporary dark romance series with standalone novels, this was a captive romance with an arranged marriage and hate-to-love trope – Finding His Strength (The Dirty Heroes Collection #2) by Measha Stone (3 stars) – check out my full review here.

ARC of a second book in an adult contemporary dark romance series with standalone novels – Beneath The Surface (Captive Hearts #2)  by Abbi Cook (3.25 stars).

ARC of a fourth book in an adult contemporary romantic suspense series with standalone novels – Kallan: The Switch (Indie Rebels #4) by Miranda P. Charles (4.25 stars).

First I read an ARC of a first book in an adult steampunk fantasy series with ghost like creatures called phantoms A Feast of Phantoms (Lingua Magica #1) by Kat Ross (4.5 stars) – check out my full review here.

Phantoms Large FrontLingua Magika is Kat’s latest series, a fast-paced Western steampunk fantasy with a dash of romance and adventure! A Feast of Phantoms is Book #1, with at least two more to follow.

It was supposed to be simple.

Help Marshal Sebastian Hardin escort his prisoner one stop on the railway to Charter Oak.

Just one stop.

But when that prisoner is a savant who talks to ghosts, even the simplest plans have a way of falling apart.

Sheriff’s Deputy Ruth Cortez always does the right thing. Lucky Boy is a company town, dependent on the rich and powerful Carnarvon family. Besides which, the charismatic Sebastian Hardin isn’t an easy man to say no to. When his transport derails in the middle of the prairie, Ruth begins a relentless manhunt that leads straight into the dark heart of the Carnarvon empire.

Lee Merriweather favors sharp suits and fast trains – especially when he’s stealing them. At the ripe old age of 18, he’s managed to become the most wanted criminal in three territories. Lee can’t resist playing cat and mouse with a small-town deputy, but what starts as a game becomes deadly serious.

Sebastian Hardin is the Carnarvons’ right hand, loyal to the death and willing to keep any secret to protect the family. They want Lee alive, but with the young savant’s disturbing abilities it won’t be an easy proposition. Whoever catches Lee gets the keys to the kingdom and the Carnarvons aren’t the only ones hunting him down. Sebastian has enough problems without falling for Deputy Cortez – but you can’t always choose who you love.

They terrorized the settlers until Calindra Carnarvon learned to speak their language. Her empire relies on controlling their telekinetic powers, but Lee Merriweather could destroy it all. And not even Lee suspects the shocking truth of the phantoms’ real nature.

Then I finally got around to reading a first book a young adult fantasy trilogy with some romance, action, mystery, magic and phoenixes – Crown of Feathers (Crown of Feathers #1) by Nicki Pau Preto (5 stars) – and I loved it of course 🙂

crown of feathersAn Ember in the Ashes meets Three Dark Crowns in this lush debut fantasy novel about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to join a secret group of warriors that ride phoenixes into battle.

I had a sister, once…

In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart.

I promised her the throne would not come between us.

Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks.

But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.

Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.

Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken.

Crown of Feathers is an epic fantasy about love’s incredible power to save—or to destroy. Interspersed throughout is the story of Avalkyra Ashfire, the last Rider queen, who would rather see her empire burn than fall into her sister’s hands.

Afterwards, I read an ARC of a fifth book in a new adult contemporary sports romance series, which can be read as standalone love stories of five ice-hockey playing friends – Heartless King (Kings of Rittenhouse #5) by Maya Hughes (3.5 stars) – you can take a look at my review here.

Heartless King Ebook CoverTwo blue lines. That means not pregnant, right? Right? Oh, sh*t.

Five years ago, Colm Frost asked me to marry him and I ran. I ran from my painful past too raw and fresh to escape. He was the only one who looked at me like I wasn’t broken and made me believe it. He made me feel it.

Now, he’s the hot, angry, hockey player on the mend.

I’m the physiotherapist who’s supposed to get him back on his feet.

I don’t think our night together was what his doctor prescribed, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t dreamt of him every time I close my eyes. I woke up beside him with my body still singing from the way he fanned the flames of my desire, but I couldn’t stay.

His lips on my neck. His hands wrapped around my waist. His impressive…ahem, touch leaving me breathless.

One moment of wild inhibition and it’s come back to bite me in the butt. Kind of like he did that night.

But a baby? Our night was supposed to be a one time thing, closing a door on the future I couldn’t handle.

Will this new bump in the road be everything we needed to find our forever?

Heartless King is a standalone friends to enemies to lovers, accidental pregnancy romance that brings all the laugh out loud, angsty feels!

Yesterday I read an ARC of a first book in a new adult dark reverse harem paranormal romance series with shape-shifting fae, vampires and a witch – Last Chance Academy (Immortals of Talonswood #1) by Alex Lidell (4.75 stars) – and I loved it way more than I expected, review coming in May.

last chance academyFoster girl. Trash. That’s all I am to the world. And that’s fine. After surviving New Jersey’s foster system, I can survive anything. Even taking a dangerous job from a tall, gorgeous stranger so I can keep my little sister safe—a job that goes very, very wrong.

Suddenly I’m facing a brutal choice: a decade in jail or four years as a ward of Talonswood Reform Academy—a place with an all too perfect correction record. A place that makes bootcamp look like a spa.

But Talonswood and its cruel cadets are far more than they seem, and so are the four men who rule it. Ellis. Asher. Reese. Cassis. Powerful, impossibly beautiful men who ignite a wildfire inside me—and who will stop at nothing to make my life a living hell.

But it turns out I’m more than I seem, too. And I’m not going down without a fight.

LAST CHANCE ACADEMY is a full length dark reverse harem paranormal romance. This is the first of four books in Immortals of Talonswood, a new series from Amazon’s top-100 author Alex Lidell. With hot shifter-fae, delicious vampires, one lone witch, Talonswood isn’t your normal reform school.

Today I read an ARC of a first book in a young adult paranormal romance series with vampires, shifters, witches and reapers (humans who hunt rouge supernatural creatures) – Van Helsing Academy (Supernatural Rehab #1) by Stacey O’Neale (3.5 stars) – which I expected to like way more than I actually did, review coming in May.

van helsing academyWelcome to the Van Helsing Academy: a rehabilitation center for vampires, shifters, and witches who don’t like to follow the rules.

Mina can’t remember anything about the night she was attacked. All she knows is what she’s been told: she got separated from her team during a mission and turned up two months later covered in cuts and bruises alongside two dead vampires.

After being blamed for their deaths, she is sentenced to three years at the supernatural rehabilitation center, the Van Helsing Academy.

As Mina searches for answers, lies are slowly unraveled and alliances forged. Soon she will uncover a secret plot that threatens to destroy her family legacy and ignite a war between the supernatural factions.

Van Helsing Academy is the first book in a new YA paranormal romance series. No harem. Perfect for fans of Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins, and Mythos Academy by Jennifer Estep.

So today I read a super exciting email… I was approved for the ARC of the new R.S. Grey adult contemporary romantic comedy with hate-to-love trope coming out in 7th of May (the book is going to be sent to me tomorrow or after tomorrow…yippee) – Love the One You Hate by R.S. Grey. It’s my first ARC from one of my all time favoutite authors, so I’m beyond ecstatic to have a chance to read this book already tomorrow or on Friday, so it’s going to be my next read for sure. I can’t wait to read it, I have exceptionally high expectations.

LovetheOneYouHateEbookCoverNicholas Hunt is the man I hate.
For good reason.

His opinion of me is tainted by prejudice even before my arrival at his grandmother’s estate, and my first impression of him is just as abysmal.

His arrogance and icy demeanor make it clear that he’s the type of man who’s best handled at a distance.

Fortunately, space shouldn’t be an issue inside this Gilded Age mansion and its lush gardens. If I stick with the servants and he keeps to his sailboat and vintage Porsche, we should hardly cross paths at all. Unfortunately, at Rosethorn, I find that all roads eventually lead to Nicholas Hunt.

Sparks fly as we spar at the dinner table. Fighting words are flung in the shadows of the palatial halls.

We hang suspended in our hatred of one another, painfully oblivious to the heat and tension that build with every moment we’re left alone. We’re liable to kill one another, I think…right up until my eyes land on his lips and a new feeling grips hold of me: lust.

What’s worse?
He knows it.

They say you should keep your enemies close, but when Nicholas tightens his grip on my waist and draws me near, I’m not sure if it’s out of loathing or love.

One thing’s for sure—I intend to find out.
