She was never supposed to walk into my club.
But she did.

I shouldn’t have looked twice at her.
But I did.

The criminal underworld is no place for a girl like her.

One night with Katerina isn’t enough, but men like me can’t afford to be weak.
So, I tell her to leave me behind.

She does, but not before she sees something she shouldn’t.

When she goes into hiding, it’s my duty to hunt her down.
I have a job to do, and she needs to disappear for good.

But four years later, Kat isn’t alone anymore.
And the little boy right beside her looks just like me.

A. Zavarelli LogoA. Zavarelli is a USA Today and Amazon bestselling author.

She likes all things chocolate, books that come with warnings, and putting her characters through hell. Her tales have been known to flirt with darkness and sometimes court it unabashedly altogether. Revenge themes and tortured souls are her favorites to write and this gives her an excuse to watch bizarre and twisted documentaries in her spare time.

She currently lives in the Northwest with her lumberjack and an entire brood of fur babies.

My Thoughts

I remember when she looked at me like I was her hero. Now, I’m the enemy, and it feels like betrayal. A hot knife in my back. I don’t know how to make her understand.

If I have to be honest then this review is kind off hard to write, because I’m not sure what to say exactly.

I was a throwaway kid. Not one person gave a single damn about me.

Did I like this book? – Yes (especially the ending and that cliffhanger, it was just something).

Did I want/expect more from it? – Yes (from a dark mafia romance I excepted more suspense, danger, intensity and darkness).

Was it a dark romance? – Yes and no (less dark than I expected it to be).

Should there be trigger warnings? – Yes (some of them – rape (off the page), murder, violence, blood, and rough sex)

I have no attachments. Because attachments become vulnerabilities.

It was a bit dark and triggering story, there was mafia setting, and the hero was a ruthless killer, but with some morals. I liked both protagonists – Lev and Katerina. Their romance was a tad bit twisted, but kind of sweet insta-love/lust. The story was captivating, but at the same time it felt a bit slow moving. I wanted more suspense, I wanted all of the book to be more like the ending, because that was an emotional roller-coaster and made me sit on the edge of my seat.

I can’t slay her demons when I have my own. The best thing I can do for both of us is take her home and tell her goodbye. That’s the only logical conclusion. Every other path is a recipe for disaster.

There was passion and beautiful chemistry between Lev and Kat. There were some steamy scenes, some very sweet scenes (especially Lev with his son), there was some danger and suspense (especially at the end), there were some secrets coming to light – dark and blood chilling. You will find family loyalty, bloody violence and steamy romance with possessive alpha-male mobster and young girl with past from nightmares.

A bullet to the head would have hurt less than discovering I have a son who has no idea who I am. He is half mine. Katerina and I made him together. But she took it upon herself to steel him away, never informing me of his existence.

What can I say more? I’m not a fan of secret baby trope, as I more enjoy just dark and angsty enemies-to-lovers, suspenseful and dangerous mafia romances, so I wanted to feel more of those vibes here. I haven’t read other books of these two authors, so I didn’t feel the excitement and sentimentality when seeing cameo from Boston Underworld, however, I can’t wait for the next book in this duet because that ending left me breathless.
