From Chapter 10 – Strange New World

“Somebody, please tell me that whole thing a minute ago was just a bad dream,” Annie said.

“I don’t think it was,” I replied, as I tried to get my bearings.

“Hey,” Sam said. “Has anyone seen Sean?”

Annie quipped, “Dude, I can barely see you!”

“Sarcasm… at a time like this,” Lily asked, pushing up at her glasses. “Be nice Annie. Please? Just this once?”

The five of us fanned out a few feet apart and called for Sean but heard no reply.

“I smell something sweet… like lilacs,” I said, inhaling the fragrant air.

Morgan added, “I think it smells like the hot tea my Dad likes—Earl Grey.”

            “Yes, bergamot… that’s it.”

A loud, but amiable, sound of a bird calling through the trees drew our eyes upward, toward the pastel violet sky above us. The canopy of trees, with their varying colored leaves and floral adornments, shimmered as the sweet-smelling breeze wafted through this unusual forest.

We all began to look around us in wonder. Lily took note of the curious foliage that surrounded us. Colors and varieties of wildflowers she had never seen crowned the bright, rust-colored blades of grass beneath our feet. Near us, a tree appeared ancient, its trunk and branches twisted and covered in thick, dark bark. The leaves that crowned the tree were large—twice the size of a hand—and in vibrant shades of turquoise, blue, and lavender. Near the tree was a tall, flowering bush with bright yellow blooms, long and pointed, protruding from bright green, leafy pods.

As Lily reached her hand out to touch one of the blooms, the entire bush seemed to recoil, as though it were somehow afraid of her. Lily quickly pulled away as I watched with awe.

“Maybe it doesn’t like the color red,” Annie sniped, referring to the color of Lily’s baby doll top.

“Be careful you guys,” I said. “I don’t think this place—wherever we may be, is anything like Texas.”

Lily continued to watch the bush as it appeared to relax. “It’s okay, pretty bush. I won’t hurt you,” she said, as she again reached for the yellow bloom, gently touching it with her hand.

Sam turned and saw her stroking the flower, as she would pet a dog or cat. “I don’t think it’s really afraid of you. It’s not like it’s aware.”

As Lily turned to respond to him, a deep voice spoke. “That would not be a correct assumption, Samuel Blake, of the planet you call Earth.”
